Abstract

Sustainable Ways to Community Prosperity A workshop with German, Danish and American experts who showed sustainable ways to: * Reduce our dependence on foreign oil; * Increase our energy and national security; * Reduce the levels of damaging greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere; * Create jobs! Delegations from Denmark and Germany came together with business and community leaders and interested citizens in Charlottesville, Virginia on March 29, 2012 for day long forumson sustainable ways to community prosperity. The story of Denmark and its pledge to make the country fossil fuel free by 2050 was presented by two areas in Danmark: The municipality of Thisted that is almost fossil fuel free now and the island of Samsø that achieved energy self-sufficiency in a decade's time; Germany, a leader in energy efficiency and renewable energies demonstrated what is possible with the new energy transition. The city of Munich and the municipality of Saerbeck with its former US-base Scharnhauser Park showcased how German cities and regions are going to have 100% renewable energy supply in the near future. Communities produce enough energy with rewables to cover their needs and even produce enough energy to export it and make money on it. TIME Hero of the Environment 2008 Søren Hermansen and Mayor Wilfried Roos of the City of Saerbeck as well as additional delegates from Germany and Denmark, who came together with business and community leaders in the Charlottesville region for a day-long forum on sustainable ways to community prosperity -- including a keynote speech by the President of ACORE, Vice Admiral Dennis V. McGinn -- USN, ret.. Community leaders of Charlottesville discussed the region's many green projects. The City of Charlottesville's 2025 Green City Vision and the University of Virginia and Darden School of Business will be discussed. These representatives will show the leadership, research and education that it takes to build a renewable energy infrastructure.
